From Atoms to Applications:
Integrated Science and Nanoscience for Educators

2026 Virginia Tech Nanoscience & Integrated Science Professional Development Workshop for High School Teachers

What do mRNA vaccines, clean water technologies, advanced electronics, and emerging cancer treatments have in common? They all rely on nanoscience -- the study of materials so small that their properties can change in remarkable and useful ways.

This hands-on workshop introduces educators to nanoscale science and integrated science teaching through real-world applications and classroom-ready activities. Participants will explore key concepts such as self-assembly, surface chemistry, diffusion, and size-dependent behavior while learning how these ideas connect to challenges in health, energy, the environment, and technology.

Workshop modules highlight applications in nanomedicine, environmental nanoscience, advanced materials, and nanotechnology instrumentation, while also introducing educational pathways and career opportunities in nanotechnology.

Teachers will leave with new content knowledge, practical teaching resources, and engaging examples that make cutting-edge science accessible and exciting for students.
